IS FREE WILL REALLY FREE? 08/01/2010
What is free will anyway? Is it really free to do what we want? Yes. But the exercise of free will apart from harmonizing with God's will becomes self will; therefore, we might surmise that our free will apart from total submission to God's will is really an expression of how we choose to live in opposition to God's will. If this is true, then free will apart from God's will isn't really free. It is sin. 9 Comments Post Title. 07/30/2010
We're spending a few days in the lower Florida Keys. It has taken 3 days to transition from the frenetic pace of Jersey to the laid back pace of the lower keys. Driving on highly enforced 35 mph roads seemed like slow death until I realized I didn't have to be anywhere fast or there wasn't something in life I was missing. No tv, amusements, schedules...could this be what heaven is like? Slowing down my external pace has enhanced the pace of my interior exploration - taking time to think about what is really important: walking in tune with the Spirit, enjoying family, relationships. I wonder if we (Christians) are missing something in our pursuit of programs and activities. Could we be shrinking the capacity of our interior by overscheduling our lives, whether at church or in general? I think so. As a pastor I'm driven by a desire for people to walk in tune with God. I want to walk in tune with God. Yet I wonder if we are spiritually crippling our people rather than teaching them to run the race God has set before us when our faith - our church - is defined through the grid of our western culture? Maybe so. I hate religion 01/18/2010
We're not supposed to hate most things, but I admit, religion is one thing I detest. Ok - I put it out there. A friend just posted a great quote on Facebook. Here it is. What do you think? 'Religion is the archrival of intimate spirituality.... Religion, a tiresome system of manmade dos and don'ts, woulds and shoulds - impotent to change lives but tragically capable of devastating them - is what is left after a true love for God has drained away. Religion is the shell that is left after the real thing has disappeared.' -Doug Banister- I'm not sure I've ever heard it put better. Music fun 12/26/2009
It's been a while since i've been on this site. I've decided to resurrect my singing from a hobby standpoint, so I'm posting a few things I'm working on for friends and family. Just posted are a few rough cuts of some arias I'm working on as well as the Lord's Prayer. Thought on love and marriage. 10/13/2009
As a pastor I have the privilege of working with couples. Sometimes before they are married and often afterwards. Usually when it's "afterwards" it's because there is a problem. The pressures of today's society wreck havoc on our marriages. So many things vie for our attention. The feeling of love is great. No, it's wonderful. But marriage can be a real wakeup call. Here's a great quote that is somewhat humorous, but with real implications. "Love is blind – marriage is the eye-opener." – Pauline Thompson Reflections on Faith In Action Sunday 10/11/2009
Today our church completed Faith in Action emphasis by suspending church services and going into the community for various service projects. This was a massive object lesson for us to comprehend that BEING the church is foundational to GOING to church. Don’t get me wrong. Going to church is really important. But it takes full significance when coming to church is a celebration of what it means to be the church during the week. Case in point – this afternoon we all returned from our projects to eat, share our stories and celebrate the day of service. People were laughing, enjoying one another as much as I have seen since I’ve been at Grace. Today was church in the truest sense. When Tim led us in worship, our worship became an exclamation point to a day of serving others in the name of Christ. Toward the end of the day the director from the Cottage Place in Ridgewood came by to thank us for our work over there. I realized that today we built bridges into our communities. We built bridges of credibility and humility. We weren’t out there serving with an agenda. We were serving because God tells us to. These are the bridges God will use to allow us to share the love of Jesus. I’m more and more convinced that to reach people with the love of Jesus we have to win the right to be heard. Our culture is cynical and bombarded by images of religious hucksters, judgmental people and/or Christians who are self absorbed, never giving anything back to their community. It’s like we have to tear down the barriers that have been built by some so we can build bridges. I think of Jesus’ ministry. He served people, met needs and proclaimed the truth of the Kingdom of God. Oddly – he never judged. He said he didn’t come to condemn but to save. I like that. The people he was most hard on was not the pagan society in which he lived, rather it was the religious people of the day. (seems like we've got that one backwards) Today, while pulling weeds at Ho-Ho-Kus elementary school, 2 conversations illustrate this. They both occurred within minutes of each other. Another church meets in the school. As they were leaving a woman stopped and asked Susan about the writing on our shirts. (our shirts read ‘Don’t Go to Church’. At the bottom it reads “Be the Church.” The lady never read the bottom. Susan said we were from Grace Church. Bu before she could explain, the lady said, “Doesn’t Grace believe in going to church? I don’t think that is a very good message.” Then she walked off. A few weeds later another woman (about the same age, from the same church) stopped and told Susan. “This is so beautiful. This is wonderful what you are doing.” Now that’s cool. I love church. I love to worship together, studying God’s word together. I’m reminded of the words from the writer to the Hebrews. He captures the essence of going to church. Hebrews 10:23-25 (NIV) 23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. 25 Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another--and all the more as you see the Day approaching. STOP PLAYING CHURCH - START BEING THE CHURCH 09/14/2009
I came across this post tonight on www.turnbacktogod.com. What are your thoughts? Pastor Rob I’m done… with the plastic smiles I’m done… with Christians who walk into church like they are walking into a Country Club I’m done… with Christians pretending they are perfect I’m done… with churches saying “that’s the way we’ve always done it” I’m done… with Christians who say healing services in these modern days are fake I’m done… with Christians who avoid fasting I’m done… with people who sit in church waiting for the pastor to “bless” them I’m done… with those who think pre-schoolers are too small to learn about Jesus I’m done… with Christians who mock pastors that cast out demons in the name of Jesus I’m done… with Christians who complain about their church but have never given a dime to God’s kingdom I’m done… with people who stand and cheer at football games on Friday nights but walk into church like they are at a funeral I’m done… with Christians who can sing Madonna’s latest hit but can’t recite the 10 commandments I’m done… with Christian fathers who push their sons to play football, but have never taught them to read the bible I’m done… with Christians who go into deep debt to “keep up with the Jones’” who sit next to them in Sunday School I’m done… with fake “Christian-ese” on men’s lips I’m done… with deacons who complain about an unsaved teenager wearing a ball cap into the sanctuary I’m done… with Sunday morning being the most segregated hour of the week I’m done… with Christians who think they are better because their skin is white I’m done… with Christians who think organs are holy and drums are not I’m done… with Christians who say “I’m fine” when really their marriage is in shambles I’m done… with people who think their past should be a secret, lest they be judged by the church I’m done… with churches who think worship is for Sunday morning I’m done… with Christians who have swallowed the lie that we can and should control how many children God gives to us I’m done… with Christians who don’t believe in supernatural healing I’m done… with Christians who don’t believe in the unseen warfare all around us I’m done… with Christians who believe miracles only happened in the bible I’m done… with Christians who call on God like He’s a cosmic genie in a bottle I’m done… with American Christians who think somehow they have attained all they have I’m done… with this “little religion box” that some Christians have put Jesus into I’m done… with the limits that most churches put on God’s power I’m truly done… no more limits… no more boundaries… no more plastic people… no more playing church… I’m done. Jesus did not die so His people could play church and be comfortable. How long will we “play church” while there are lost souls to win, hungry orphans to feed, hurting widows to love, lonely hearts to mend, and broken lives to heal? There is no limit to God’s power displayed through His people if we could just stop playing church and start being the church! Communion 08/27/2009
I'm thinking about our upcoming communion service Sept 6. How often we take these poignant moments for granted. It is so easy to approach this sacred time as mere rote. I'm reflecting on what can be done in a service to make this time meaningful and rewarding for the participants. SOMETHING TO PONDER Communion is supported by 3 legs: past - present and future. As we share in communion we look back to the incredible sacrifice Christ paid for each of us. We think about our life now. In our teaching, Sept 6, I will focus on the "now" aspect of communion. I believe the "now" aspect is the call to WALK WORTHY OF THE LORD. (See 1 Thess 2:12) Then there is a future component. We are to observe communion until Jesus returns. Christ said something interesting in Matthew 26. Here is a quote. You've read this many times. Do you know what Jesus is talking about? Think about it and post your response. Blessings, Pastor Rob MATTHEW 26:29
Narcissistic Worship 06/09/2009
One definition for narcissism is "A psychological condition characterized by self-preoccupation." All of us are probably guilty of self-preoccupation to an extent. When we aren't careful, we tend to evaluate things by what brings us pleasure or satisfaction and judge as wrong, that wish doesn't. Having served as a Worship Pastor for many years prior to becoming a Senior Pastor, I've been caught in the middle of various "worship wars." In 25 years of worship ministry I saw every criticism imaginable. In one service there were responses that the music was too traditional and the music was too contemporary - in the same service. Was one right and the other wrong? Were both right? What makes this attitude objectionable to me, other than the damage it does to a local church because people are judging their brothers and sisters in Christ, is that it unveils a consumer mentality - even a narcissistic approach to worship. If I approve of the music or the worship order, it must be spiritual. If it is too loud, too soft, too fast, too slow, too whatever to my taste - it can't be worship. Or even better - this is performance, not worship. I always wince when I hear that because that statement reveals one is judging the heart attitude of the person on the platform. I would suggest that heart attitudes should be examined, but not of the one on the platform. Up and Down with prayer 04/05/2009
I committed to spend a certain amount of time in prayer during the month of April. I entered this with high expectations - and still have them. After all, this is just day 5 of 30 days. But I imagined a more steady journey. One day prayer was intense, hard work. Not that praying was hard - but it became an emotionally and spiritually exhausting time. The following day God took me into the Psalms and into an extended time of rest and peaceful prayer. The burdens of the previous day were there, but God provided a needed relief. This has been followed with a day of distractions and a day of wondering if God is hearing me. It seemed that God was silent. When God is silent I become very restless and begin to question if I'm even on the right track. My mind raced first to Psalm 8. Sitting in the field behind my house, the moon was shining and I recalled that God put that moon in the sky along with the stars and planets...and He has time for me. Then I was reminded of Psalm 46:10. "Be still and know that i am God." I'm reminded once again that when God is silent that is the time for me to be still and know He is in control, He hasn't forgotten me, and that He is God. | I serve as Senior Pastor of Grace Church in Ridgewood, NJ. I'm a husband, dad, a recovering musician and a guy on a spiritual journey trying to understand what it really means to live a Spirit led life. This site is my opportunity to share various things I care about and think about with my Grace Church family, my friends and anyone else who stumbles across it. There are several things which really get me charged: Jesus, my family, Grace Church, motorcycles, theology, music and Alabama football. Enjoy and feel free to join in the discussion.
