We're spending a few days in the lower Florida Keys. It has taken 3 days to transition from the frenetic pace of Jersey to the laid back pace of the lower keys. Driving on highly enforced 35 mph roads seemed like slow death until I realized I didn't have to be anywhere fast or there wasn't something in life I was missing. No tv, amusements, schedules...could this be what heaven is like? Slowing down my external pace has enhanced the pace of my interior exploration - taking time to think about what is really important: walking in tune with the Spirit, enjoying family, relationships. I wonder if we (Christians) are missing something in our pursuit of programs and activities. Could we be shrinking the capacity of our interior by overscheduling our lives, whether at church or in general? I think so. As a pastor I'm driven by a desire for people to walk in tune with God. I want to walk in tune with God. Yet I wonder if we are spiritually crippling our people rather than teaching them to run the race God has set before us when our faith - our church - is defined through the grid of our western culture? Maybe so. CommentsToni 07/30/2010 6:02pm
LOVE that view :) I agree with you very much so, about the "shrinking the capacity of our interior by overscheduling our lives, whether at church or in general". Walking with GOD certainly takes quiet time regularly alone with GOD. But I do believe we need one another on a real spiritual level as well, some one or a few close brothers or sisters who will challenge us to live for Him in the midst of our struggles, pray with us regularly; rejoice with us; live their real lives seeking GOD with us. Our rapid pace up here and the church "functions" and business, only creates a busy forum sometimes. Each of us has to seek out other believers who are willing to be vulnerable and accountable with us. Have a blessed week!

Leave a Reply | I serve as Senior Pastor of Grace Church in Ridgewood, NJ. I'm a husband, dad, a recovering musician and a guy on a spiritual journey trying to understand what it really means to live a Spirit led life. This site is my opportunity to share various things I care about and think about with my Grace Church family, my friends and anyone else who stumbles across it. There are several things which really get me charged: Jesus, my family, Grace Church, motorcycles, theology, music and Alabama football. Enjoy and feel free to join in the discussion.
