I hate religion 01/18/2010
We're not supposed to hate most things, but I admit, religion is one thing I detest. Ok - I put it out there. A friend just posted a great quote on Facebook. Here it is. What do you think? 'Religion is the archrival of intimate spirituality.... Religion, a tiresome system of manmade dos and don'ts, woulds and shoulds - impotent to change lives but tragically capable of devastating them - is what is left after a true love for God has drained away. Religion is the shell that is left after the real thing has disappeared.' -Doug Banister- I'm not sure I've ever heard it put better. CommentsMatt 01/19/2010 10:28am
That's great, reminds me of the verses about how the Pharisees would only put burdens on the backs of their followers. I believe religion is the institution that does that. Jesus told us his yoke was easy and burden light, we should know it's him when we have a light and free feeling about life deep down. Not the tiresome, weary feeling of always not doing enough or never satisfied with our lot in life that is the result of a faith in religion.

Leave a Reply | I serve as Senior Pastor of Grace Church in Ridgewood, NJ. I'm a husband, dad, a recovering musician and a guy on a spiritual journey trying to understand what it really means to live a Spirit led life. This site is my opportunity to share various things I care about and think about with my Grace Church family, my friends and anyone else who stumbles across it. There are several things which really get me charged: Jesus, my family, Grace Church, motorcycles, theology, music and Alabama football. Enjoy and feel free to join in the discussion.
